The Wollemi Pine occurs in areas of acidic sandy loams with a pH of about 3–4 (Botanic Gardens Trust 2004b). Soils consist of sandstone-derived boulder alluvium with some shale components and substantial basalt wash (Nash & Ravallion 1998). Soils of the area are very shallow and absent in some places. High levels of organic matter are present and slow growth rates are likely to be associated with low nutrient levels. Climate of the area is characterised by hot summers, cool winters and moderate rainfall with a summer-autumn maxiumum (NSW DEC 2007).

The Wollemi Pine occurs in the warm temperate rainforest and rainforest margins in a Eucalyptus spp. forest/woodland complex within the Sydney Sandstone Biome of the eastern coast of NSW. Topography controls vegetation associations where Wollemi Pine occurs. Within the canyons rainforest occurs and the surrounding ridges have dry sclerophyll woodland. Associated species of these communities include Coachwood (Ceratopetalum apetalum), Sassafras (Doryphora sassafras), Acmena smithii, Backhousea myrtifolia, Quintinia sieberi, Angophora floribunda, Dicksonia antarctica, Cyathea australis, Eupomatia laurina, Lepidosperma urophorum, Sticherus flabellatus, Todea barbara, Cissus hypoglauca, Clematis aristata, Pandorea pandorana and Parsonsia straminea (Nash & Ravallion 1998).
