Do we have earthquakes in Australia?
It’s unusual for an earthquake to occur in Australia because it is located a long way from the edge of the Australian plate.
Professor Bill Collins from the University of Newcastle suggests that we could, "consider the Earth to be like an egg. It has a shell and a soft interior. The shell consists of crustal plates, and in some places they move towards each other and in others they move apart."
When crustal plates push against each other, the built up energy can be released as an earthquake a very long distance away.
