One of the most troublesome features of hazardous waste sites is that the chemicals are present in mixtures, and that the actual composition of the mixtures is seldom fully known. Even when known, there is relatively little experience on how the toxicity of one compound is modified by simultaneous exposure to others. Three types of interaction occur: additive, where the effects of the two compounds together is equal to the cumulative effects both might have if they were administered separately; synergistic, where the two compounds together produce an effect greater than the sum of their individual effects (or at a lower combined dose); or protective, when one compound reduces the effect of the other.
