The contamination of water due to colour effluents coming from different industries is a current problem all over the world [1–4].
The textile industry is the largest consumer of colourants and uses them in conjunction with other auxiliary chemicals.
Among several dyes, azo dyes are the most important and frequently used for
colourization in textile industries. Studies indicate that the reductive cleavage of the azo bond (–N N–) by azoreductase enzyme in the liver produces aromatic amines and can even lead to intestinal cancer [5,6]. Thus mineralization of these dyes in the effluent is essential before being released in to aquatic and terrestrial environment. The degradation of these dyes in order to reduce visual colour contaminant to meet increasing environmental demand has continued to attract the interest of several research groups.
