This paper has been largely restricted to describing effects at
the stand level (5-100 ha). However, the area of a clearcut is a
critical determinant of its impact on a variety of ecosystem
processes and conditions. Effects on streamflow and water
quality are largely determined by the proportion of a watershed
harvested. Large clearcuts minimise the benefits of edge effects
from surrounding forest. Adjacent mature forest can be a source
of inoculum for many fungi and soil organisms, which may be
important in forest functioning and contribute to the
maintenance of forest productivity. It is also a source of seed for
re-establishment of understory species, and local tree genotypes,
if these have been lost from the clear-cut area. The edge between
forest and clearcut is optimum habitat for many wildlife species.
The practice in many areas, such as British Columbia, of leaving
a short (5-1 0 year) "green-up" period before adjacent blocks are
harvested, may have some aesthetic advantage, but it does little
to mitigate the impacts of clear-cutting, and has led to the
creation of substantial areas (2000 ha or more) with effectively
the same hydrological, successional, and habitat status.
