The benefits of AODV protocol are that it favors the leastcongested route instead of the shortest route and it alsosupports both unicast and multicast packet transmissionseven for nodes in constant movement. It also responds veryquickly to the topological changes that affects the activeroutes. AODV does not put any additional overheads on datapackets as it does not make use of source routing. The limitation of AODV protocol is that it expects/requiresthat the nodes in the broadcast medium can detect eachothers’ broadcasts. It is also possible that a valid route isexpired and the determination of a reasonable expiry time isdifficult. The reason behind this is that the nodes are mobileand their sending rates may differ widely and can changedynamically from node to node. In addition, as the size ofnetwork grows, various performance metrics begindecreasing. AODV is vulnerable to various kinds of attacksas it based on the assumption that all nodes must cooperateand without their cooperation no route can be established.
