Japan likes stay-at-home wives
TOKYO — More than two in five people in Japan believe the husband should work and his wife should tend to their household, the latest Cabinet Office survey on female empowerment showed on Saturday.
Showing little change over the last decade in the way people think of female advancement, the survey signals a challenge to the efforts of Prime Minister Shinzo Abe's government to create a "society in which women can shine" and push more of them into the workforce.
The Abe government has set a goal of raising the proportion of women in leadership positions in Japan to at least 30% by 2020.
Asked what obstacles exist to increasing the number of women leaders in society, nearly half the respondents cited insufficient support from husbands and other family members. Respondents also cited insufficient nursery facilities and elderly care, and long working hours.
