V. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION
Content analysis informed this study about OSNs’ nature,
history, applications and subscriptions which all explain how
they are popular to users worldwide. Friendster began online
social networking in 2002. Hi5 followed in 2003 while
Orkut and MySpace came in 2004. Facebook came in the
same year and has maintained high popularity since 2008. In
2009, the ten most popular OSNs have been visited by more
than 1.7 billion people, and 893 million people have
subscribed to them. From over 200 OSNs available,
Facebook has the lion’s share with almost 68% or 1.2 billion
visits in a month, and 250 million (28%) unique subscribers
out of the total shares of the world’s top ten social
networking sites. The informants reported that they have
been more active in Facebook because “there are lots of
apps (applications) and there you can easily find friends”. A
student affirms, “I only have 170 friends in Friendster, and I
have had that for a year or so, but with FB in just a month I
have more than 800 friends and I am still adding”.
