It should be noted that the large number ofreprimands per minute in classes taught by studentteachers does not necessarily indicate severe behaviourproblems. It is not pupils’ misbehaviourwhich has been counted, but only what studentteachers or the cooperative teacher perceived asmisbehaviour; thus, the problem might stem fromtheir perception. Sieber (1979) found that, on theaverage, a teacher reacts to behaviour problemsabout 87 times daily, or 16,000 annually. Thenumber of student teacher reprimands while teachinga class, as found in the present research, issimilar and even significantly higher. If we refer tothe number of comments by student teachersseparately, the number is similar, whereas thenumber of adult comments in classes taught bystudent teachers is significantly higher than thosefound in Sieber’s research (1979).
