The conclusion from this essay is that demography and anthropology are passing like ships in
the night since neither group feels the need to embark an on open discussion about the nature of
evidence and the prerequisites for what might amount to convincing proof. Demography in
particular has fallen between two stools, missing out on developments in both the physical and the
social sciences and not realizing that other approaches are possible. Two reasons for this oversight
stand out. One is that demographic data are abundant, discrete, and accessible. With such a wealth
of this kind of material, demographers can become arch-empiricists without much need for bridging
theory or even crude speculation. The other is that the easy definition of a population has blinded us
to more complex thoughts about what holds people together and what divides them.

Kesimpulan dari tulisan ini adalah bahwa demografi dan antropologi lewat seperti kapal-kapal di
malam hari karena kelompok tidak merasa perlu untuk memulai sebuah diskusi terbuka tentang sifat
bukti dan prasyarat untuk apa yang mungkin berjumlah bukti yang meyakinkan. Demografi di
tertentu telah jatuh antara dua bangku, kehilangan perkembangan baik fisik dan
ilmu-ilmu sosial dan tidak menyadari bahwa pendekatan-pendekatan lain yang mungkin. Dua alasan untuk pengawasan ini
