1) shallow sockets are used for most nuts and bolts that are easy to reach
2) A deep socket is used when the threaded part of a bolt or stud extends through the nut so that a shallow socket will not reach the nut . it is used where socket depth is needed . because of the depth , the deep socket can also be used as a very short extension
3)the universal socket is used in areas where is not a straight way to a nut bolt . the hinged joint or universal of this socket permits it to be used like a shallow socket , at an angle
