Due to the complex industry structure and long period
between the introduction of SVC and achieving freedomfrom the disease, the UK provides an interesting case study to investigate aquatic animal disease establishment and
control. This study provides a descriptive review of UK SVC
cases from introduction up to the recognition of freedom,
based on a retrospective analysis of historic data collected
by the relevant UK Competent Authority (Cefas). The study
aims to: (i) understand routes by which the pathogen may
have been introduced and spread, (ii) assess the effectiveness
and shortcomings of the control and surveillance
strategies adopted, and, (iii) based on this data make recommendations
to help prevent and control future cyprinid
pathogen incursions
