Passengers at Italy's Orio al Serio airport near Milan faced delays and cancellations Friday after a cargo plane ran off the end of the runway there.
The 737-400 crashed through an airport perimeter fence with its nose coming to rest on the edge of a nearby road. Photos captured the dramatic scene, which forced the closure of the airport for about 2-½ hours early Friday morning, according to The Associated Press. Flights have resumed, with photos showing crews using cranes to move the jet.
The incident forced the cancellation of 15 flights and delayed others, AP reports. The Orio al Serio is in Bergamo, about 30 miles from Milan. A major hub for discount airlines flying to the region, the Bergamo airport is Italy's third busiest. The airport warned on its website Friday that "due to operational restrictions, ... flights may be delayed or canceled."
Italian aviation officials say the plane – an ASL Airlines aircraft operating for cargo company DHL – overshot the runway when it arrived from Paris Charles de Gaulle shortly after 4 a.m. local time. The pilots were uninjured in the incident, which is now under investigation by local and safety officials.
