Rape is a major problem in Thailand today. Some of the Thai population believes that the law with punishment is not severe enough to protect victims or prevent rapes from happening. Whoever, commits an indecent act on a child not yet over fifteen years of age, whether such child shall consent or not, shall be punished with imprisonment not exceeding ten years or fined not exceeding twenty thousand Baht, or both. More than half of the 32,000 girls and women who were raped in Thailand last year were students. Another factor contributing to the persistent high levels of rape is the process of investigation by the police; prosecutor and witnesses in court do not favor the victims, the weakness of law guilt about sexual harassment.
