Adaptation by Neurohumoral Mechanisms There are numerous
adaptive responses to dysfunctions of organs or organ systems that
are mediated by humoral or neuronal signals between cells located

CN−, mitochondrial electron transport inhibitors (e.g., rotenone,
antimycin A, myxothiazole), uncouplers (e.g., 2,4-dinitrophenol)
or ATP-synthase inhibitors (e.g., oligomycin) (see Table 3-6 and
Fig. 3-13) as well as AMPK activators mimic the response to hypoxia
in these cells. There are numerous other neurohumoral adaptive
mechanisms in the body, such as the sympathetic reflex as
well as activation of the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system in response
to hypotension, and the feedback systems between endocrine
glands and the hypothalamus-hypophysis, which correct abnormal
