Enabling Leadership: Unleashing Creativity, Adaptation, and Learning in an OrganizationMetrics! Dashboards! Value-based purchasing! Nurse leaders are under mounting pressure to produce value in a complex, competitive, and rapidly changing environment.1 Producing excellent outcomes requires leveraging the creativity and leadership potential at every level of the complex system.2 The challenge is to create an environment that engages the leadership capacity of every individual in the system to optimize performance while continuing to meet the many administrative, regulatory, and financial requirements. Meeting this paradoxical challenge requires a different approach to leadership: one that is designed to unleash the creative, adaptive, and achievement potential throughout the system.3Uhl-Bien, Marion, and McKelvey4 offer a framework for leadership in complex adaptive systems that optimizes creativity, adaptation, and the ability to learn and thrive. They propose that leadership does not reside in an individual leader or a position, but rather it is a dynamic embedded within the context of the system.
