Also, the results of this study showed slightly lower figures for HODs who had not undertaken any management training than those reported by Middlehurst[2]. In her much larger study of HODs from 24 universities she found that 51 per cent had received no formal training. The noticeable difference in my findings was a high attendance at a local group of universities' management programme, the NEUM. However, Middlehurst's study was conducted a few years ago and she predicted that the regional programmes would grow in popularity.
