Should cell phones be banned from public places?
It is undeniable that telecommunication plays an important part in our lives, especially in Greece. Every day, we can easily find many people carrying pagers and even mobile phones everywhere as these new devices can help them contact the fast changing economy. In fact, they are cheap, convenient and fast means of communication in this modern world. However, does it mean that the use of pagers and mobile phones can neglect other people's right?
The answer is certainly "negative". It is very common that we have been disturbed by the noise of pages and mobile phones when we are totally absorbed in concerts or in cinemas. As a result, our feeling in unbearable. Though announcements are made beforehand advising audience to turn off their pagers and mobile phones, we are still interrupted by those selfish users of pagers and mobile phones. Therefore, obviously, stricter policy is needed to ensure the right of the public.
However, as these modern devices are important in this commercial and financial society, the total banning of pagers and mobile phones in public places is not practical. It well cause inconvenience and the people of Hong Kong cannot catch up with the modern trend of communication.
Therefore, in order to minimise the disturbance caused by pagers and mobile phones and make good use of these modern scientific inventions, I would like to suggest that in some places where "silence" is necessary, such as in concerts, meetings, and cinemas, the use of pagers and mobile phones should be banned. However, in public places such as restaurants or buses and public transports, where "silence" is not so strictly observed, the use of pagers and mobile phones can still be allowed.
In fact, is is the user's duties to use their pagers and mobile phones in a proper way. They should be considerate when using them. In this way, we can have a better and more advanced society.
