PIMRS Model of Instructional Leadership. Concurrent with the research being conducted by Bossert’steam at the Far West Lab, Hallinger andMurphy (1985) proposed a complementary model for definingand measuring the instructional leadership role of the principal. This became popularly known asthe PIMRS framework after the associated instrument (that is, the Principal Instructional ManagementRating Scale; Hallinger, 1982). The PIMRS model proposed three dimensions in the instructionalleadership role of the principal: defining the school’s mission; managing the instructionalprogramme; and promoting a positive school learning climate (Hallinger and Murphy, 1985). Thesebroad dimensions were further delineated into 10 instructional leadership functions (see Figure 2).
