Regrettably I have been unable to find out any further information on the artist - I purchased it from an antiques shop in Bideford, Devon as I thought it to be an unusal subject especially at such an early date. I have examined it out of the frame and can confirm it's definitely the correct date, but there were no further clues as to the identity of the artist. There was a Charles Pilkington (1850-1918) who was a mountaineer and explorer as well as an amateur watercolourist who I thought perhaps might be the author, but I have been unable to place him in South East Asia at that time. Certainly the picture is very skillfully executed and I would expect to find others by the artist, but I'm currently stumped. I think identifying the precise location might lead to more clues, but there are thousands of Chedi's in Thailand and it could take some time!
