Since the 1970s, children of both sexes have been taught home economics, and areas of study have included food and nutrition, hygiene, health, textiles, life skills, consumer studies, and childcare. In the 1990s the subject has developed to embrace industry and the academic world. In Britain, students can study home economics through the three discrete subject areas of food and nutrition, textiles, and childcare. Food and nutrition requires an understanding of diet, health, food choices, and food processing, as well as knowing how to manage resources and develop relevant, appropriate, and transferable skills to meet human needs. As part of the National Curriculum in England and Wales, food and textiles gan fe studied within design and technology. The first food technology and textiles technology GCSEs have been created to replace home economics. Although home economics can still be studied in the optional curriculum time, it is likely to decline in popularity.
