The proposed Puerto Rico plant would process 2,642
tons a day of municipal and industrial solid waste. This
represents about one-third of the total daily volume of
trash on the island, which is mountainous and has few
suitable landfill sites. Furthermore, the plant would generate
85 megawatts of electricity, of which 30 would be consumed
by the process, and 55 megawatts would be sold
to the Puerto Rico Electric Power Authority (PREPA), an
agency of the commonwealth. This would be a boon to
the island, where power generation is more costly than on
the mainland.
