The Brazilian coffee crop will rise

The Brazilian coffee crop will rise by 6.89m bags next season, Brazilian coffee exporter Terra Forte said, but robusta production is to fall.

Production of robusta is under pressure from dry weather in the key growing region.

Terra Forte saw the coffee crop, which will begin to be harvested in the coming months, at 54.17m 60kg bags, up from 47.28 bags in the previous season.

Falling arabica

The arabica crop was seen rising to 41.38m bags, from 32.05m bags in the previous season.

But ideas of robusta production were cut to 12.79m bags, down from 15.23m last year.

There has been dry weather across Brazil's coffee growing areas, including Espirito Santo, which produces most of Brazil's robusta crop, also called conilon.

Drought in Espirito Santo

On Tuesday Brazil's national coffee council, CNC, reported that the drought had eased in arabica growing areas.

"The main arabica origins benefited from rain in the first month of 2016, favouring the development of the crop so far," CNC said.

But CNC reported the "opposite situation" for robusta growing areas with plantations in Espirito Santo hit by "severe drought, which will lead to the second successive harvest short of productive potential".

Despite an overall increase in coffee output in 2016, CNC said the supply of coffee will "remain tight".

If exports remain at their current level of 36m bags, and domestic consumption rises to 20m bags, CNC warned that stocks would "reach a minimum level" in 2017.
