The pericardium is rarely the prima

The pericardium is rarely the primary site of infection,
but is more often secondarily infected either by hematogenous
spread, direct spread from adjacent structures, or
after cardiac surgery. With the availability of broadspectrum
antibiotics, the incidence has decreased, while
the etiologic agents have changed from predominantly
pneumococcus and streptococcal species to staphylococcus,
anaerobes, and fungus, especially in an immunocompromised
host.

Perikardium jarang situs utama infeksi,
tetapi lebih sering infeksi sekunder baik oleh hematogen
menyebar, penyebaran langsung dari struktur yang berdekatan, atau
setelah operasi jantung. Dengan ketersediaan broadspectrum
antibiotik, insiden telah menurun, sementara
agen etiologi telah berubah dari didominasi
pneumococcus dan spesies streptokokus untuk staphylococcus,
anaerob, dan jamur, terutama di immunocompromised
tuan rumah.
