Primary industry, which generates raw materials, includes agriculture, forestry, fishing, and mineral extraction. Secondary industry, also known as manufacturing, processes raw materials into products. Tertiary industryis the provisison of services, such as food, transportation, education, and financial services. 6 The most basic tertiary industry is commerce (trade in goods), which encompasses everything from local shops to international shipping companies. Throughout most of history, economies have been based mainly on agriculture, hand-manufacturing, and commerce. The latter two correlated with economic robustness: the more prosperous a civilization, the larger its manufacturing sector and trade flows. Manufacturing did not soar ahead as the dominant sector of national economies until the Industrial Revolution, when hand-manufacturing was superseded by mechanized manufacturing. Eventually, tertiary industry would become the largest component of the worlds most advanced economies.
