The environmental audit criteriaAn environmental audit is a systematic, documented, periodicand objective evaluation of how well environmental regulatoryrequirements and commitments are met. The challenge to theauditor normally is selecting and determining the scope of theaudit. This was the reason for designing a guide that will helpSAIs and auditors when they choose and design audits onenvironmental impacts of mining. The guide presents variousways of describing the scope, from ownership and access rightsfor exploratory purposes through mining and processing, use ofthe end product and disposal of waste materials. Additionally,the guide presents the responses of governments, such as lawsregulating mining and mineral activities, conventions, protocols,declarations, treaties, standards, codes and recommendationsrelated to mining and the environment.
