Experimental
Animal Center, South Korea. Focal cortical
infarcts were produced by focusing light on the sensorimotor
and motor cortex in Rose Bengal-treated
rats. Briefly, the rats were anesthetized using a
ketamine and Rompun mixture (30 mg/kg, injected
intraperitoneally), then placed in a stereotaxic frame.
The body temperature was maintained at 37°C using
a rectal probe and heating pad. The skull was exposed
and the fiber optic bundle of a KL1500 LCD cold light
source (Carl Zeiss, Jena, Germany) with a 4-mm or 2-
mm aperture was positioned on the skull at bregma and
4.0 mm lateral to the midline over the light sensorimotor
and motor cortex (Watson et al., 1985; Dietrich et
al., 1986; Carmichael, 2005)
