Renal failure is kidney function insufficient to sustain life.
Acute renal failure occurs in a matter of days, usually preceded by a serious illness,
major surgery, exposure to toxic substances, or trauma such as an auto accident. It is
reversible and is usually resolved within 2 to 6 weeks. Dialysis support is necessary
until the kidneys start functioning again.
Chronic renal failure develops slowly often over many years. It slowly destroys the
glomeruli and causes permanent, irreversible loss of kidney function. It requires
treatment for the rest of the patients life.
