Although many schools and colleges such as Dartmouth college (originally founded in the early 1700s to teach christianity to Native Americans),Stanford University (whose football team was dubbed "the Indiana" because former football coach Glenn "Pop" Warnre had come from the Carlisle Indian School in Pennsylvania, where he had coached Native American football and Olympic standout Jim Thorpe),and the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga dropped Native American nicknames and mascots as early as three decades ago, other organizations have responded to these accusations from organizations such as the National Coaliton Against Racism in Sports and Media and the national Congress of American Indians by claiming that their depictions are meant to honor Native Americans and their heritage.
