Beale decided to keep his great discovery from the Spanish governor. He quietly announced that the rest of his men were now going hunting. As he had hoped,no one seemed very interested. They rode 200 miles north into the Sawatch Mountains. Sure enough, nearby there was gold, and silver too. Only charley, the guide, was in on the secret, and he helped the group get their treasure. He was able to speak with several of the local tribes. He made friends with them and hired some of them to help Beale's group mine the metals. Summer went by, then winter, and then another summer. By this time Beale and his men had collected 5,000 pounds of gold and silver. There was still more, much more, to take from the earth. Yet they felt uneasy about the mined ore. They were afraid their secret would be discovered. Finally Beale decided that he would accompany a party of ten men back to Virginia with the treasure. They would not put the treasure in a bank. Banks were too risky in those days. They would put the haul into the ground, digging it up later when they all returned. The men also decided they would not tell anyone about what they had found. The party traveled back east through small towns, avoiding cities and people until they reached home.
