Meaning. This psalm presents at least two theological issues for us to ponder: monotheism and the fidelity of the lord to his promises. Monotheism is so easily taken for granted in the western world. In the ancient near east a comfortable polytheism existed, and it was only gradually that Israel came to the understanding that the exclusive worship of the lord alone ultimately rested on a monotheistic understanding. In deuteron-isaiah other gods go down in defeat; they are called “godlings” or “nothings”. According to ps 115:5 the idols “have mouths, but do not speak; eyes, but do not see.” The next logical step, once their inefficacious activity is understood, is the rejection of their very existence.
