Agriculture remains Cambodia's most important economic sector in terms of its contribution to both income and employment for most of the country's rural population, which accounts for about 85% of the total. Agricultural GDP growth averaged 5.8% per annum, in real terms, during 2004-10, but despite this relatively strong performance, its
contribution to GDP has gradually declined, from 40% in the mid-1990s to around 33% in 2010, although it remains the primary source of employment for at least 70% of the population. Raising productivity in the labour-intensive agriculture sector remains a concern in Cambodia.
