The glyceraldehyde 3-phosphate produced in chloroplasts by the carbon-fixation cycle is a three- carbon sugar that serves as a central intermediate in glycolysis. Much of it is exported to the cytosol, where it can be converted into fructose 6-phosphate and glucose 1-phosphate by reversal of several reactions in glycolysis.
Glucose 1-phosphate is then converted to the sugar nucleotide UDP-glucose, and this combines with fructose 6-phosphate to form sucrose phosphate, the immediate precursor of the disaccharide sucrose. Sucrose is the major form in which sugar is transported between plant cells
