The present study attempts to strengthen the traditional Mexican approach, where
children have minor participation during a class, their attitude is passive and they
show shyness, respect and obedience with their teacher. Under these conditions, the
performed activities are focused on text copying, a lot of dictation, and syllabic reading. Children show dependent behaviors when they execute an activity outside of the
classroom routine. Furthermore, the pedagogic practice developed by the teacher is
focused on routine activities, s/he has control over the class and determines what children have to do, s/he imposes but does not propose, and does not relate classroom education with the child’s daily reality. Particularly, in mathematics education the child
is involved in a memorizing procedure to learn abstract concepts instead of being motivated to construct their own knowledge through reflection and discussion.
