Please accept my deepest apology for missing our appointment on Friday. Of all this year's meetings, this was the one I wanted and needed to attend. Based on our earlier discussion I have made all the reports pertaining to the logistics strategies. But due to unforeseen circumstances I got delayed and could not make it to the meeting.

However all I can do is offer my sincere apologies, I know it was my obligation to attend the meeting as I had committed to it. But due to a power outage in our area I was delayed. The power outage lasted 4 hours making my entire schedule go haywire. I realize how busy you are and that your time is valuable, but I hope this will not prevent us from rescheduling our appointment. Can we have the meeting on Wednesday at 4pm? If not we can meet anytime according to your schedule. Do let me know. Meeting with you means a great deal to me. I sincerely appreciate your patience and consideration.

I apologize that I am not available to attend this meeting due to out of town commitments. I feel it is very important as President and a representative of the Humane Society of Fairfax County to voice our concerns regarding the use of bow and arrow hunting as a means to attempt to reduce the deer population in Fairfax County.

We realize we are never going to agree that hunting is a safe or humane solution of deer management and you have justification for your position and we have justification for ours. Depending on which publication you read and who wrote it, there can be the difference between night and day, right and wrong and whom you choose to believe is the expert. Unfortunately, statistics are not available in Fairfax County to prove either position. However, we believe, the issue of Bow Hunting, in particular, has far reaching repercussions with regard to safety for citizens, as well as ethical and immoral implications to the majority of Fairfax County Citizens. If these sanctioned hunts were not kept so secret or the public educated with true statistics of hunting as a solution to deer over population, we believe you would indeed, loudly hear, how the citizens of this county would react to this issue.

Our office has received numerous complaints in the past couple of weeks regarding the Bow and Arrow Hunts taking place in and around their neighborhoods. The only advice we can offer is for them to contact their Board of Supervisors and voice their concerns. The number one question asked, other than how can this be stopped, is who approved this barbaric form of deer population control to begin with and why are we not following the lead of other states with regard to alternative methods. We, the Humane Society of Fairfax County, are also asking these questions.

In 1999, the County’s Deer Management Program was adopted by the Board of Supervisors. We find it inconceivable that after 10 years the County’s Deer Management Program has not put a dent in the deer population, if there truly is one. Nor, to our knowledge, has any attempt been made to use any alternative methods to reduce the number of deer in our county or reduce the conflicts. If there is the overwhelming concern for citizen’s safety with regard to deer and vehicle collisions, or the issue of public health with the spread of Lyme’s Disease or the belief that the deer are responsible for almost a total eradication of understory, why does the County’s Deer Management Program continue to use only lethal means if it has had no measured effect? Why aren’t we looking for real solutions?

Until positive action is taken to research the effectiveness of bow hunting as a proven solution and alternative methods of deer control are studied, we ask the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors to discontinue the use of Bow and Arrow Hunting as a method of deer population control and if this is not a possible consideration, we ask for just cause as to why Fairfax County’s Deer Management program has, in 10 years, failed to consider any other method of deer reduction, other than killing them.
