Actions to integrate local andindigenous knowledge by suco andaldeia (hamlet) councilsWithin each village, the suco chief and village leaders(such as elders, traditional leaders and membersof suco councils) are responsible for emergencyand disaster risk reduction activities. Suco DisasterManagement Committees (SDMC) have beenformed in some villages. An activity that could beimplemented in at least one of the three project sitesis to promote the formation (if not already existing)of a SDMC involving suco/aldeia chiefs and councils, traditional leaders, women, and youth. Although thecurrent focus of SDMCs is to request assistance fromthe sub-district and district administration during andafter emergency situations, these committees couldalso be used as a venue through which traditionalleaders and elders transmit LINK related to hydrometeorologicalhazards and climate change, and as avehicle to disseminate the IEC materials developed.Suco councils, with support from sub-districtmanagement committees and District DisasterManagement Committees (DDMC), can implementthe process of documenting LINK related to hazardsand climate change, with the goal of incorporatingLINK into their village and hamlet disaster plans.
