Set Objective Assessment Criteria
Base an evaluation on fact-based criteria and not on subjective opinions. Not only does this make the topic easier to discuss, but it can clarify your expectations for the person undergoing evaluation. Use well-documented, direct observations or results from listening-skill drills. Suitable criteria might include whether the person interrupts a conversation, finishes a speaker's sentence or practices patience through body posture and tone of voice when speaking with co-workers or customers. Whether the person focuses on the conversation or continues working, doodles on notepads or sends nonverbal messages that portray boredom are additional criteria.
