gatingtheeffectsofMgOasasolidsolutionadditiveon
the grainsize,relativedensity,microstructureandmechan-
ical propertiesofWC–Al2O3 composites.Sowhenwe
consolidateWC–Al2O3 composites,MgOiscertainly
consideredasanadditiontoimprovethepropertiesofit.
In thecaseofWCmatrixceramics,itisreportedthat
adding anoptimumrangeofSm,Y,Ce,CmProrLaCe
rare earthmetalsormetalmixturescanimprovethe
flexural strengthofYT15(WC–15wt%TiC–6wt%Co)
cementedcarbide [13]. Pan’sresultsshowthatadding
small amountofrareearthoxidesraisethebending
strengthandwearresistance,andincreasethecorrosion
resistance ofcementedcarbide [14]. Xiaoetal. [15] report
that additionofbothY2O3 andNbCcouldimprovethe
fracture toughnessofWC–10Coalloyswithoutcompro-
mising itshardness.MaandZhu [16] investigatethe
influence ofLa2O3 addition onhardness,flexuralstrength
and microstructureofhotpressedWC–MgObulkcompo-
sites, andindicatethattheLa2O3 addition couldnotonly
improvetheflexuralstrengthofWC–MgObulkcompo-
sites butalsoenhancetheVickershardness.Inaddition,

rare earthdopantsinAl2O3 [17].
