Effects of Conditioning on Camitine MetabolismIn treated subjects, the plasma concentration ofshort-chain acylcarnitines (a reflection of the metabolicstate) was 12.5 ±8.4 gum on entry and decreasedto 9.6±8.8 ,um on exit (pplasma short-chain acylcarnitine concentration to the total acid soluble carnitine concentration (an indexof the distribution of total carnitine between free andacyl carnitines2,33,35 decreased in treated subjectsfrom 0.19±0.07 on entry to 0.14+0.09 on exit(p<0.05). In control subjects, there were no changesin either the plasma concentration of short-chainacylcarnitines (8.6±5.4 gm on entry and 8.7±5.2 gmon exit) or the ratio of plasma short-chain acylcarnitineconcentration to total acid soluble carnitineconcentration (0.13±0.08 on entry and 0.13±0.07 onexit) during the course of the study period.
