Sydney , with the 2000 Olympic , put itself firmly on the tourist map . Tourism now accounts for nearly 5% of Australia's economy , and the number of visitors rose 11% in 2000 . The major beneficiaries , other than tourism , were the convention and construction industries , and the "eco-industry" . Many environmentally-friendly policies developed as a result of the Games . The Olympic Park was built on a disused industrial estate , Homebush Bay , which had been a salt mine , a brick factory , an arm depot , and a general waste dump . The government spent 137 million Australian dollars cleaning up chemical waste before they could begin construction . This included using plants to filters and feed on waste .As well as the clean-up of Homebush , the construction programme included many environmental initiatives , such as the preservation of the endangered green and golden bell frog , which now has a population six time greater than before the Games . The main priority was energy and water conservation . The athletes' village was the world's largest solar-powered suburb and became ordinary homes after the event . Stadium Autralia , the main arena , uses 30% less energy than conventional designs . The water is recycled from sewage , cutting drinking water consumption by 50% . Sydney's communications manager , Michael Bland , claimed that the city could be proud of its effort to conserve energy , water , and the environment while minimizing waste and pollution .
