The very first activity that I was

The very first activity that I was assigned was transcribing a recording of a presentation for project’s preparation. The speaker in the recording is the research director from India so her accent is quite harder to listen to and understand than recordings I have listened at school. In addition, at Insight Asia Company, I was working on a new field, which I have never approached before (food and beverage field). Luckily, I was provided with relevant materials, such as Briefing Guide For Penny Project, Check Quota Each Sku Penny Project, Penny Project Questionnaire Vn, Observation Forms, Report Forms, The Book of Vietnamese Cooking by Deh'ta Hsiung and Vietnames Home Cooking by Charles Phan. From these, I found information that relates to the discussion in the recording so I could get familiar with technical terms and new words. I was also given sample forms of the previous transcripts.
To do this task, I had to combined all the skills I had learnt at school such as listening the key words, guessing main ideas of passages, using grammar to complete the fully sentences, depending on the context to put all the sentences in correctly English tenses. Immediately, I started listening the recording twice before starting typing the transcript in order to catch the key points of the whole recording. I was instructed at school that sometimes we must guess and predict what the speaker says depending on the immediate context in order to transcribe all of what the speaker said. However, sometimes I still could not identify what the speaker was talking about. Therefore, I must spend lots of time listening over and over again. Also, I took advantage of the relevant materials and the sample transcripts and took note all the technical terms in order to recognize what the speaker said easier. After that, I listened the recording again and paused it to type the transcripts.

The second activity is to translate Interviewer Training Manual from English into Vietnamese. The texts are about regulations and specifications of the company. Thanks to the translation course at the USSH, I found it quite easier than the first task. However, sometimes I still got stuck at some abbreviations and technical terms I just followed the steps that I usually did when translated at school. In the beginning, I prepared all kinds of dictionaries that could support me to translate such as Online E-V Dictionary, Oxford Dictionary, and Specialist Dictionary. I used the communicative translation skill to make the reader easy to understand (using simple words to translate). Therefore, it was very important to make it easy for readers to get the main meaning accurately when they read the translation. When I met some familiar technical terms but I did not remember their meanings, I had to check into my previous notes. The notes saved a lots time during the time when I translated the whole texts. In the case of new terms, I must look up in the specialist dictionary. Eventually, I did not meet so many difficulties in this task as I had got used to translation skill when I did many similar exercises at school.
The next activity that left me many valuable real experiences was when I worked as a supervisor in Penny project. This project was to made questionnaire surveys in some restaurants around Ho Chi Minh City in order to research and understand customers’ satisfaction about the food at those restaurants such as what dishes customers prefer, what prices they think are suitable to the quality of the food, and so on. In this task, I have not only improved some skills that I learned at school (communication skill, and presentation skill) but also gained other soft skills (such as monitoring skill, problem-solving skill, and persuading skill). For instance, I must persuaded managers of the restaurants where we intended to make a survey. Then, I monitored all the interviewers and remind them to follow all the rules what they have trained by company in order to receive the best result from the survey. It was not easy to keep my eyes on the interviewers all the time. Sometimes, problems happened. For example, an old customer did not agree to attend the survey and asked why he had to answer such questions and what the purpose of the survey was. At that time, I had to explain to him and clear all this doubts about our survey and corporate to join our survey. Besides, I also made daily reports and sent to fieldwork executive in order to follow the processes of the survey.
After Penny project, I got back with the role of translator. I translated specification tables for coming projects. The specification tables relate to automobile, communication networks, cast counter, and so on. I must make sure that the translations are accurate because the queries translations will be used directly to ask respondents in questionnaire surveys. Therefore, my role was not only to translate exactly the meaning from the originals but also to make it easier for respondents to understand the questions. I needed some aids to complete this task such as the sample queries, which had been translated before, Online E-V Dictionary, and my previous notes about technical terms. I also asked for help from senior staff (Mr. Tran Vu- Research Executive, Ms. Ta Kim Linh - Research Assistant, Ms. Nguyen Thi Hoa - Executive Fieldwork). I just followed all the translation steps I learnt at school. Firstly, I scanned the original queries to grasp what the topic of the queries table are about in order to find out relevant sources of vocabularies. Secondly, I started translating based on my knowledge and the aid of E-V Dictionary. Then, I read the translations again in order to make sure that is the perfect one. This task was not difficult to me when I have gotten familiar with it.
Next, I was challenged with a new task. In terms of inputting data, this task was quite new to me. Luckily, it was not so hard to do, as the company had a special link for inputting online (*) and available devices to make statistics from data and information obtained from the surveys. I also received an instruction about the way to input and I just needed to follow that instruction. First, I read and collated queries of the questionnaire’s table with the questionnaires in the link. Second, I inputted all information from the paper file into the data in the link. Then, I checked the logic between the questionnaire’s table and the queries in the link to see if the information matches or not. Additionally, after inputting, I outputted the final files and drew charts depended on the data. The charts illustrated all data tables from the surveys that have been done by customers. I took advantage of sample charts, PowerPoint to draw the new ones. I followed the steps such as reading the data tables carefully, skimming and analyzing to choose the most suitable chart to draw. In case of not understanding, I asked my colleagues in the office. I can even ask the boss if necessary. Finally, I analyzed the trend of consumers and the way they react to their daily products.
In conclusion, throughout two months working as an intern at Insight Asia, I tried my best to complete all tasks. Especially, I worked as a translator most of the time at company so I could apply my knowledge at school into the real job. Eventually, I have gained a huge advantage including working experiences as well as knowledge about various fields such as automobiles, food and beverage, communication networks, and entertainments.
II/ EXPERIENCE
After two months at Insight Asia, I found that I have matured greatly and gained many considerable experiences. I have applied my knowledge from school into the real working environment such as translation skills, presentation skills, interpretation skills, computer skills. Besides, I also learnt many other soft skills like self-awareness, self-confidence, patience, flexibility, creative thinking, and time management.
First of all, when it comes to translation skills, I felt so lucky because I was working as a research assistant so I have translated many kinds of materials relating to all projects of the company. The very first project I worked with was related with food and beverage field. Therefore, I have learnt numerous of new technical terms like natural chicken’s aroma, chicken clear soup base market, home-make stock, chicken powder, savory umami and so on. Actually, since I have never translated long texts of approximately 30 pages and with so many strange structures of sentences and phrasal verbs, this chance has obviously helped me raise my persistence and patience. However, after translating a few pages, I got used to the texts as many technical terms in the next questionnaire tables were repeated.
After the first project, I gained more confident to fight with the Toyota project- an automobile project. Most of the words from original materials of this project were related to components of a car. This project was much more difficult than the first one as I have never approached the field before. I was overwhelmed with the specification list of engine and drive train. Actually, I even have not known about all of technical terms in Vietnamese such as chassis & suspension, lighting system, exterior, seating & interior trim, audio & navigation system, and so on. Though this task was tough, I tried to find a good way to solve it. I found some bilingual documents about this field in order to translate accurately. In addition, I read all previous translations that have been translated by a senior research to produce the most natural and professional translation as much as possible.
Moreover, I have become more mature after resolving complicated problems at work. The very first trouble I had to face that when I was assigned a long recording about a presentation to transcribe, which made me nervous.
