Constructed Time and Place: The Creation of Manggarai
Ideas about time and place in present day Manggarai are in part a product of a colonial
past. I will suggest here that the creation of Manggarai as a place has to do with the
interest external powers had in gaining control over parts of Flores. Present ideas about
time and history have also been shaped by the fact that Manggarai was for so long the
target of conflict and external control, while particular ideas about power and the rise to
prominence of various segments of the population have also been influenced by colonizing
forces originating outside of Manggarai.
Manggarai is located on the western end of the island of Flores, in the province of
Nusa Tenggara Timor. This part of Flores has experienced rather different influences and
historical processes than eastern Flores, since Manggarai was never occupied by the
Portuguese. The Portuguese presence in eastern Flores, however, had an impact on the
religious destiny of Florinese on the far western end of the island, for when the Portuguese
handed over suzerainity of eastern Flores to the Dutch in 1859, it was with the
understanding that the whole of Flores would be missionized only by Roman Catholics.5
This, as will be seen, had political implications, and eventually resulted in a very important
political promotion for a section of the population in Todo, Manggarai, that I will be
examining here.
