In addition, it is worth noting the following:
A – Assessment: If you do not have an assessment, don’t be afraid to say so.
You could say: ‘I’m not sure what the problem is, but I am worried.’
R – Recommendation: Know what you would like to happen by the end of the
conversation. Any order that is given on the phone should be repeated
back to ensure accuracy. The request for direct help should be made
clear as part of the recommendation so there is no misunderstanding.
This is particularly important in situations where staff may be new,
inexperienced or need to communicate up the hierarchy. The use of
‘Recommendation’ creates a format for staff to clearly state what should
happen next, without feeling awkward and uncomfortable.
