From Fig. 1b, itcouldbeobservedthattheVickers
hardness andfracturetoughnessofWC–40vol%Al2O3–
MgO compositesweresignificantlyimprovedwiththe
addition ofMgO.WhentheMgOcontentwas0.1wt%,
both theVickershardnessandfracturetoughnessreached
to themaximumvaluesof17.6GPaand9.59MPam1/2,
respectively.WiththeincreasingcontentofMgO,the
Vickers hardnessandfracturetoughnesswerestillhigher
than thatofundopedWC–40vol%Al2O3 composites,
however,followingadecreasingtrend.Itwasindicated
that theoptimumMgOcontentwas0.1wt%;anexcessive
addition ofMgO(0.25wt%–0.1wt%)resultedinthe
decreasingrelativedensity,increasingWCgrainsizeand
decreasingmechanicalproperties.
Accordingtotheaboveresults,itcouldbeindicated
that, MgO,asasinteringadditive,hadakeyrolein
improvingthedensificationandmechanicalpropertiesof
the WC–40vol%Al2O3 composites.MgOadditionacted
to increasetherateofdensificationdirectlythrougha
raising diffusioncoefficientanddecreasetherateofgrain
growth duringsinteringthroughaloweringsurfacediffu-
sion coefficient.Meanwhile,MgOadditioncouldalso
lower thegrianboundarymobility [12]. Thesewerethe
main reasonsforthehighrelativedensity,refinedWC
grainsizeandenhancedmechanicalpropertiesoftheWC–40
vol%Al2O3 compositesdopedwith0.1wt%MgO.However,
