In this sample, the area with the greatest incidence ofTB was working in the stores/workshop. While employeesworking in these areas move throughout thehospital, they spend less time in clinical areas than otherHCWs. The risk in this group may indicate that infectioncontrol measures in these areas are inadequate dueto a low perceived risk and poor to non-existent infectioncontrol measures due to the necessity to keep hospitalsupplies in a climate controlled environment.Transmission in this area may be occurring betweenstaff working in these areas that may be exposed to TBin the community. Community exposure was not measuredin this study. These findings indicate a need tofurther investigate infection control in non-clinicalareas and to include non-clinical staff in infection controleducation. In addition, occupational health shouldinclude these non-clinical staff in TB symptom screeningsto potentially identify cases amongst this group.
