Abstract: A Texas teen, aged 16, sued her
parents because they forcefully opposed
her having her baby; they wanted her to
abort it. She won with the help of a local
pro-life organization. Privacy rights in the
U.S. give all women the right to terminate
their pregnancies. It was successfully
argued that the same laws allow women
to choose to keep their baby. Teenagers
have evolving rights to determine their
own medical care. There are variations in
laws from state to state. Laws regarding
abortions are the most austere. Teenage
pregnancy, while on the decline in the
U.S., is still much greater than in other
countries. If teenagers are not given rights
to make important medical decisions on
their own, they are more likely to forego
or postpone medical treatment.
