Pain can only be experienced when nociceptive afference reaches the cortex. Most brain
imaging studies report an activation of the sensory and affective brain structures following a
nociceptive stimulus, demonstrating that pain perception is a complex experience with
emotion, cognitive factors, and previous experience playing an important role in perceived
pain. It can therefore be understood why the clinician should address pain from both the
physical as well the emotional aspect.
