Class 1-3 Check List
The class will normally be secure in the following:
Numeracy
Class
1/2 Ability to recognise and analyse numbers at least to thousands (e.g. 243 = two hundred and forty-three or two hundreds, four tens and three units)
3 Can count to 1,000 and in reverse!
1-3 Knows what follows 99, 999 etc.
1 Knows by heart addition and subtraction facts in region of twenty (number bonds)
1/2 Knows multiplication tables 1 to 10 at least (both in order and out of sequence)
2/3 Knows these as division (not only 6 times 4 is 24 and 24 is 4 multiplied by 6 but also 24 shared between 6 is 4 etc.)
3 Tricks of 10 x table; 9, 5, 11, and others
2 Odd and Even numbers (understands their difference)
2/3 Uses place value in range of 4 places correctly, i.e. shows sense of distinction between one in twelve and 138 in use)
(The above are needed before fractions can be efficiently tackled.)
1/2 Have a sense for symmetrical completion of forms on upright axis (early in Class 1) and as horizontal reflections
3 Ability to complete 'complex' symmetries including left/right, above/below with crossing at mid-point (a certain maturity is needed for this). (Assuming the children have crossed the nine year Rubicon.)
2/3 'Carrying numbers' in + e.g. 19 + 2 and x e.g. 74 x 2
2/3 Can tell time at least hours, half past, and quarters
1 Knows meaning in use of + - x
2/3 Subtraction from 'smaller units' (e.g. 12-9) at this stage this is best done by decomposition - from whole to part.
1-3 Can do simple mental arithmetic in narrative form relating to above skills
2/3 Able to use money correctly for simple bills and calculating change etc.
1-3 Freehand drawings of common geometric forms (as a dynamic drawing rather than precise forms)
3 Able to calculate simple 'pre-area' sums such as how many milk bottles will be in a crate of bottles holding six by six using simple calculations, or size of wall or floor on basis of number of bricks or tiles.
