Implications for practiceProphylactic antibiotics will reduce the incidence of endometritisfollowing both elective and non-elective cesarean section bytwo thirds to three quarters and the incidence of wound infectionby up to three quarters. Post-partum febrile morbidity andthe incidence of urinary tract infections are also decreased. Fewerserious complications will occur. All units should have a policythat recommends the administration of prophylactic antibioticsfor women undergoing cesarean section.
