Emergency Situations
If for some reason the worst happens and you end up in a collision there are a few steps to take to protect yourself. The first step is to write down the other vehicle's license plate number. Do this quickly in case that car decides to speed away while you are getting out of your car. Having this license tag number will help you find that person so he may pay for any damages. Next, check and make sure no one is hurt. If so, call 911 immediately. Time can mean everything in these situations. A great step to take now is to take pictures of the scene. Then the next step would be to clear your car from the road if it is blocking traffic and can be moved. Finally, the law requires drivers to show proof of insurance to the driver of the other vehicle involved in the collision if that driver asks for such proof. In other words, drivers exchange information like the name of the insurance company, the insurance policy number, the vehicle's identification number, mailing addresses, and telephone numbers. All of this is done in an effort to make the person who is at fault for the collision pay for the damages.
Collisions make running from the scene very tempting. If this happens then the situation becomes a hit and run. This is a Class C felony and could have some jail time as a punishment. So, think long and hard before running from the scene of an accident. Remember, cameras are everywhere.
